Bock promotes peace education
With a growing awareness of the need for peace education among young people, Northwest Yearly Meeting’s Board of Social Concerns has released Cherice Bock for part-time ministry in Peace Education.

“A major concern is that some churches have very little emphasis on the Quaker distinctive which centers around the idea that Christ calls us to be peacemakers,” Cherice says. “We have, to some extent, lost this distinctive, which is unfortunate. We think it is something to which Christ is calling the whole church through our example.”

In addition to contacting local churches to offer support in peace education, Cherice began a peace e-group, open to anyone interested in exploring peace education and working towards peace. The bulletin board format allows participants to ask questions, share resources, and communicate about upcoming events.

Coach Carter film champions values
In 1999, Ken Carter, alumnus of George Fox University and head basketball coach at Richmond High School (CA), found himself embroiled in controversy when he locked out his undefeated varsity team, including his own son, after a third of them failed to live up to their contracts.

The action angered some parents, students, and community members, but athletes at Richmond High School quickly learned that their coach was serious about academics—and that he was a man of integrity. The film, Coach Carter, was released in January to favorable reviews, painting a positive picture of the influence one man, and one university, can have.
