Alaska Yearly Meeting
Greetings from the farthest north Friends Church. We may have cold weather, but we have warm fellowship through Jesus Christ.
Alaska Yearly Meeting of Friends Churches is made up of 13 churches. There are 11 in the northwest arctic region of Alaska, one in Anchorage, and one in Fairbanks. We also have the Friends Bible Training School to train future pastors for the ministry. The Yearly Meeting office is located in Kotzebue, some 30 miles above the Arctic Circle.
The Inuit people of this area had a prophet, named Maniilaq, one of their own people. He spoke of a Great Father, and prophesied that a people would come that would tell of this Great Father. So when they heard the Gospel message they knew this was a fulfillment of Maniilaq's prophecy. They appointed two of their men to go and ask the Friends missionaries in Kake, Alaska to come and bring the Gospel to them. The Friends of California sent missionaries to Kotzebue (then called Kikiktagruk) in 1897. Since then the church has grown. They became their own Yearly Meeting in 1970.
We are thankful that the Lord brought the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our people. And now we are looking for more opportunities to serve Him.
