I Said Yes and God Opened a Door
SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I said yes when asked to edit our Yearly Meeting's newsletter. I didn't have any experience, just ideas. One day my friend, Reta, invited me to a full day desktop publishing workshop since I was the newsletter editor.
The workshop had been scheduled weeks earlier but the instructor developed bronchitis and couldn't speak. When she rescheduled, she said that those who had paid could bring along a friend for free. That friend was me.
I decided to go but wasn't sure it would do me much good; wasn't sure I should take a whole day for a workshop like this; wasn't sure it would be worth it. But I went, mainly to spend the day with Reta.
The workshop, seemingly orchestrated by a series of odd mishaps, was actually a divine appointment. I put the ideas I learned to work for upgrades to our newsletter. The instructor, Yvon Prehn, and I became friends. I attended every workshop she taught.
Then the unthinkable happened. The decision was made to close the 25-year publication The Evangelical Friend. There were a number of reasons for the decision but it was a sad day for many of us. At the same time, I was given the job of designing a newsletter which would be sent to all Evangelical Friends' homes without a subscription fee. All costs would be paid by equitable assessments to member yearly meetings.
I was overwhelmed.
I immediately called Yvon. Together we planned, prayed, and prepared for the first issue of The Friends Voice. She mentored, trained, and loved me through the ups and downs of doing a national publication. She still does.
I'm amazed when I think back to the series of events that brought me here. I love the opportunities this role has afforded me in meeting Friends across the US. I'm aware that this publication is meeting a need.
When I said yes initially, it apparently opened the door to God's larger plan. I'm learning to say no occasionally now, but only when I have to.
